This is a cave/hole type of thing for terrestrial Geckos. I use this on most of my terrariums, and it seems to be the preffered hiding place, so I assume they like it. It gives them a secure/natural feel in their terrarium, while giving you full clear visibility of your Gecko. All you need for this is
- A flat sturdy rock that measures atleast around 6" long by 4" wide.
- Substrate that is atleast a little more than 1" deep...I use sand, and it works great.
- Atleast 12-14 little rocks that are atleast 1" high, wide, and long.
- You must be using atleast a 10 gallon terrarium.
Here are some easy steps to follow. You may figure out yourself what we're doing, and I'll get hand drawn pics up quickly, which will make this explaining a lot easier.
- At the chosen location(have it anywhere, but put it where the back side is a glass side for visibility), dig out a hole atleast big enough to completely fit your long rock into, and atleast deep enough to completely fit your little rocks into.
- the glass side will be your back viewing side of the cave, and your front side will be your entrance side. You want to place little rocks inside the hole, along the side edges so that there are no gaps between them. on the back glass side put no rocks, because that is your viewing area. along the front side, place the rocks so that there are no gaps like you did on the sides, but this time have 1 gap where you want the Gecko to enter. Have the entrance gap atleast as wide as your gecko, so that he or she can enter easily.
- Now, place your big flat rock centered on top of the rectangular rock outline you just made. You should now have a below ground-level rock hide box.
- take the sand that you dug out, and fill in any space only around the left and right sides your rock cave for now, and on top of it. The front should be the only thing visible, and it should be below ground-level. You should be able to see inside the cave through the glass on the back side.
- You should still have a few little rocks left. Go to the door of your cave, and, on the left and right sides of the door, place rocks in a single file line on each side coming straight out from the entrance, creating a path to the door. You should have about 3 rocks coming out from each side. This should prevent the substrate from falling in front of the door, blocking the entrance.
- All you need to do now is carefully fill in all the space along the front side, except where the door is. You have an underground cave that you can see into through the glass in the back side. It should almost look like there is nothing there, with only an entrance as a hint.
